An extremely long name, but an extraordinarily active chess player. Only twenty-three international masters made it into the cut being the best of the best in the country of Venezuela. With that being said, our guest master for tonight is ranked 13th with a rating of 2340 and hails from the country on the northern coast of South America. The United Queens Chess Club is exhilarated to support International Wilson Guillermo Palencia Morales of Venezuela in his very first time playing online with us! Currently, the country stands at the 60th place in the rankings of the strongest chess playing nations in the world.
Born in 1981, he attained his beloved international title in his 30s (2014). Despite there being few masters in the country and being ranked 13th overall, he was considered one of the best as he became a Venezuelan representative, playing as board number 3 and 5, in the 42nd and 43rd Chess Olympiad held in Azerbaijan and Georgia respectively. In the 42nd Chess Olympiad, he scored a 50% in 9 rounds. On the other hand, in his next Olympiad two years later, he repeated his performance as he finished with a score of 3.5/7, with 3 wins, 2 losses and 1 draw. A very tough playing field indeed. In local tournaments, he shined the brightest at the Copa Santiago de Cali Elite Ajedrez Blitz Mayor in the 2051 ELO rating category, where he was able to fight against a rare grandmaster (since there are no official grandmasters in Venezuela) held in Columbia. He placed third with a performance rating of 2258, although he lost to the Cuban grandmaster in the blitz tournament. In the same tournament, under the rapid category, he bagged silver with only 1 loss against the same opponent. This shows how consistent and is not easily fazed with time pressure both in the blitz and rapid category. This 2020, he still has to prove himself; indeed, he did not lose his touch, as he joined the 2019 National Championship of Maxima Masculino and placed 5th place overall.
Let us welcome our second Venezuelan guest master!
