We’ve met several beautiful and strong women masters from Sweden including WIM Inna Agrest, WIM Viktoria Johansson, WIM Christin Andersson, WFM Susanna Berg, WFM Jelana Andric and WFM Emilia Horn at last April’s friendly match event. Now, it’s the men’s turn to kick up a notch as our invited guest for this weekend faces the young and elite Filipino players in a simultaneous match. United Queens Chess Club is happy to welcome one of the best grandmasters of the country, born and raised in Sweden, GM Johan Hellsten!
The 1975-born grandmaster deservingly earned his international title way back in the late 90s and his grandmaster title in 2004. At the epitome of his chess career, he represented his country many times such as in the 1996, 2004 and 2006 Chess Olympiad held in Armenia, Ukraine and Italy respectively. The man is also a three-time participant in the European Team Chess Championship of 1997, 2003 and 2005. In the 1997 championship held in Croatia, he easily grabbed the opportunity to place first in the individual category. At the 2005 European Team Chess Championship, he bagged a bronze medal in the individual category as the second board player with a score of 5.5 / 8, while his team, Sweden 1, landed on fifteen place out of twenty-five teams. In the same year, he traveled to Chile and emerged as the overall winner in the II Copa ENTEL Tournament 6 with a stunning performance of 10 / 12 to put him in clear first place. No players were able to match him as the second-placed player had an enormous two-point gap against GM Johan. While the hot iron was still burning from these successes, he joined the annual Swedish Chess Championship in 2006 and received a gold award with an impressive victory, earning 4 draws and 8 wins. Today his life still revolves around chess, as he found another path to love chess as a chess author. He published two books on www.everymanchess.com, namely the Mastering Strategy series, which focuses on the foundation of openings, middlegames and endgames, and Play the Sicilian Kan, a book about building a good black repertoire
This is yet another grandmaster to watch out for.
